You can now stop breathing as the sports betting in California will fail again. There was a little glimmer of hope for the legislation, as a vote with the Senate Committee on State Resources was planned this week, but it was removed at the last moment.
Even if it had been included in the vote, it would have had to go through both legislatures by the deadline this week to get its place in the November election. The sudden removal now means that supporters could consider years instead of months before sports betting can legally operate in the Golden State.
“It achieved the goal it deserved,” said tribal lobbyist David Quintana, who is the biggest obstacle to gaming advocates. “It was a bad calculation that was written without tribal input and had practically no time on the clock.”
